Whale Watching 2000

These are the photos I took of killer whales when Willow, her mom, and I went on a whale watching trip in the waters northeast of Washington state in June 2002. They came right up to and under our boat, it was very cool!

Each of these thumbnails is a link to a 640x480 version of the picture.

(Yes, I know killer whales are actually dolphins instead of whales.)

(I release these pictures into the public domain, so you may do with them whatever you like.)

These are some of the whales swimming between us and the shore. These are the first whales we spotted.

One of the whales approaching the boat.

That whale turning and diving.

So then these three whales came up from the other side of the boat, swam under us, and then surfaced on the other side. One of them was a young one (on the right).

A whole bunch of the whales hanging around the boat together.

That group diving together.

A couple of the whales came back up, and one of them flipped over onto his back.

The two whales in the last picture doin' more stuff, and there's another one whose fin popped up while I was taking the picture.

I think this was the biggest whale we saw. His fin looked pretty huge, even as he moved away to take a look at another whale-watching boat.

Another whale after a swim-by.

Four whales, one of which is doing a "spy hop" where she pokes her head up out of the water; the locals think the whale is just trying to get a good look at her surroundings.

The big whale hanging out by the other boat.

Another whale's fin. There were three pods nearby today, mixing it up a bit. That's Mt. Hood in the background.

Two of the whales splashing in the water. I don't know if they were looking for fish or were courting.

:Afew whales in the distance, one of them splashing his tail.

The last picture I took, as the whales were starting to move northward out of range of my camera.
