I grew up in southern California (5 miles from the Pacific and 8 from Mexico), went to college in Riverside (smog capital of the universe), got a bachelor's degree in chemistry, joined the teacher credential program there, and then decided to go work for a CD-ROM/video game company. In 1995 I moved to Wisconsin to be the webmaster/online coordinator for TSR, the makers of the Dungeons & Dragons® game. When TSR was bought by Wizards of the Coast (makers of the Magic: The Gathering® and Pokemon® card games) in 1997, I moved out to their office in Renton, Washington, and took a job in their game design department in the spring of 1998. While I was at WotC, I wrote products for Dungeons & Dragons (including the 3E Monster Manual), Greyhawk (including the 3E campaign setting), Alternity, Ravenloft, and the Forgotten Realms (including the 3E campaign setting). I was let go during the layoffs of March 2002, but it was an amiable layoff because I was planning to leave the company to move to southern California anyway.
I did so, and started working for Black Isle Studios, a division of Interplay. I worked Baldur's Gate 3 (which was canceled), Fallout 3 (canceled), an action RPG based on White Wolf's Exalted game, and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 3, but Interplay's executives screwed up (failed to pay taxes, insurance, rent, or employees) so the company fell apart (as the employees left) and those games never happened.
My girlfriend Willow lived in Florida until the Fall 1999, but after she graduated from college with her dance degree she moved to Washington state to work with a modern dance company. She moved down to CA with me and worked with various San Diego choreographers since that time.
Since then I've worked for Upper Deck on an as-yet unnanounced project. Then Willow and I decided to move to the East Coast so she could pursue a dance career in the Big Apple. Now I work from home as a contractor for Upper Deck, WotC, Paizo, and do self-publishing through my own tiny game company.
In addition to game design, I do 3D computer art and paint miniatures.
My favorite band is the Barenaked Ladies. Here are a couple of stories from my BNL concert experiences.
I once dated a woman with multiple personalities. She really messed up my life for a while. Here is the story of that part of my life.
I believe it is important that me take an active role in fighting evil, ignorance, and the lack of common sense in the world. Here is the first step of many for me in pursuit of this goal. Please read it ... you're part of the world, too.
And speaking of which, I've become very interested in politics and the absurdities of the world in the past few years. I have a lot of interesting articles linked in this section ... read 'em, it's edjamacational. (Warning, I'm a liberal, but not really a democrat. Most conservative policies really horrify, frustrate, and/or annoy me, and most Republicans do, too. But there are plenty of democrats who annoy me as well.)
