Background: Von (not his real name) was born in
the city of Zhentil Keep and was discovered at an early age to have aptitude
for magic. A very personable fellow, he was recruited to be a spy for the
Zhentarim, and has worked in that capacity for many years. At some point
he realized it was in his best interest and the interest of the Zhentarim
for him to enter the church, which would make him more useful to the towns
he was trying to infiltrate. As he spends most of his time under cover,
he has had little time for exploration or research, so he hasnít gained
as many levels as other Zhentarim his age. His typical guise is as a Sembian
small alchemical and magic shop prioprietor, selling potions, alchemical
items, and local folk remedies out of a modest combination business and
Personality: Von presents a pleasant façade, and makes sure to remember the names of any repeat customers of his shop. He is gracious and friendly, even with people who are rude or suspicious. At his heart he believes in the Zhentarim and knows that when they come to power across all Faerûn, he will be rewarded for all of his hard work and vigilance. He is a dangerous sort of evil person, for he is intelligent, educated, and civilized, rather than depraved and callous, and so it is hard for people to believe heís evil. He prefers to remain perceived as an unassuming minor wizard and cleric, and only takes risks to his guise when ordered to do so by the Zhentarim.
As written, Von lives in Icewind Dale. He professes to be a cleric of Azuth, sent here on behalf of his church to study ice magic. He sends monthly reports back to his superiors at Zhentil Keep. Von also accepts donations to the church of Umberlee, promising to send them on to her temple in the closest large city (he actually keeps these donations or sends them to a secret temple of Bane). Every day he casts misdirection on himself, redirecting divination spells cast on him to the chimney of his house, just in case any snoops try to get beyond his cover identity.
