This is the Wyvern from the Empires game from Hobbyproducts. Empires is a tactical minis wargame, and though I've never played it, I think if during the course of the game you find/create a wyvern eyrie, you can start recruiting wyverns into your forces. Empires is a 15mm-scale game, which means that its wyverns are probably Medium creatures if used in D&D. I like that there are smaller dragonish creatures in 3E D&D so I nabbed this guy. I wasn't sure what I was going to make him but when I realized I had him, a hunting horror from RAFM, and a leftover Chainmail crested felldrake, I came up with a unifying monster idea and painted them to match that (the idea is the chemdrake, a dragonish template for lizards that I'm writing for an upcoming book of templates for Silverthorne Games).
Originally I was going to have the chemdrakes be black with a lot of metallic highlighting, but that just made the minis look like they hadn't been painted at all (or worse, like they had been primed black and most of the primer had worn off). So I reworked the color scheme and now they're as you see them. Main color is black, drybrushed with an icky green color on the body and wings. The scales on the neck and belly are a darker version of this green, with spots in the original green. The eyes are the dark green with light green spots. You can't see it very well because of the angle of this photo (its head is in profile), but it has two sweeping horns kinda like ram's horns coming out of the sides of its head. |
