The New Argonauts -- Suggested Miniatures List

What follows is a list of miniatures used in the Argonauts playtest campaign. This is not any sort of official endorsement of the book by the companies who produce these miniatures, just a list of miniatures the author recommends. All copyrights and trademarks regarding these miniatures belong to the copyright holders, and use of those names here is not a challenge to that ownership.
These entries use the following format. Creature name: manufacturer/product line; miniature name, URL for the company website (if known), and any author notes about customizing or painting the miniature for an Argonauts campaign.

Aeetes' Dragon: Hobbyproducts/Demonworld, #4317 High Elf Dragon With Female Rider, link (company is out of business but you should be able to find a retailer via Google
This miniature is for a 15-mm scale game but the miniature is large enough that it is still a Large creature in 28mm scale. I didn't use the included elf miniature and didn't attach the wings, using putty to sculpt textured scales in the gaps where the wings go.
Greek Soldiers (including Boar Tooth Soldiers, False Oracle Guards, Greek Officers, and all PC miniatures): Foundry/World of the Greeks, WG1/3 Athenian Command, WG2/8 Cretan Archers, WG4/4 Athenian Command, WG6/8 Greek Casualties. WG7/5 Greek Hoplites Corinthian Helmets, WG8/3 Greek Mercenary Commanders, link
Foundry has such a wide selection of Greeks (armored and unarmored, mounted and on foot, and different kinds of helmets) that I was able to find miniatures for any kind of PC or NPC. They're good sculpts and (with the exception of shields and spears) almost always one-piece minis, which makes it easy to get them prepped for play. They even have several Argonauts sets, though they weren't yet available at the time of the playtest campaign.
Calydonian Boar/Erymanthian Boar/Krommyonian Sow: Wizards of the Coast/Chainmail, 88830 Dire Boar, link
This is an excellent one-piece miniature and very intimidating in scale compared to your typical PC mini. Though WotC no longer produces the Chainmail miniatures, it's possible to find the miniatures on sale in hobby shops or online. The plastic mini for their collectable miniatures game isn't as good as the metal mini but will do in a pinch.
Centaur: Wizards of the Coast/Chainmail, 88357 Centaur, link
This is a very nice miniature with good detail and a dynamic pose. Though WotC no longer produces the Chainmail miniatures, it's possible to find the miniatures on sale in hobby shops or online. As with the dire boar, the plastic version from the new game isn't as good as the metal mini but will do in a pinch.
Cerberean Hound: Reaper Miniatures/Dark Heaven Legends, 2415 Dire Wolves, link
A great miniature and it's sold two per blister (in slightly different poses!) so it suited my campaign needs perfectly. There's enough detail on this mini that a base coat and a couple of simple drybrushes make it look great.
Charon: Reaper Miniatures/Dark Heaven Legends, 2696 Charon of the River Styx, link
This version of Charon is more modernized and wears a skull-faced mask, but it's still a cool mini and puts the spook into PCs even if he doesn't look exactly like the ugly-old-man he is in the myths. The blister also includes a cool wood-texture boat miniature with a weird bird-skull prow.
Cyclopes, Greater: Wizards of the Coast/Diablo II Miniatures/40025 Diablo II Minatures: Monsters (slayer miniature), link; Rackham/Confrontation/Giant Barbarian With Halberd 2, link
I filed off the horns, elbow spikes, and axe of the Slayer, making a very nice giant. Though he had one eye instead of two, the pose and detail of the figure made it a great choice for the playtest. The Giant Barbarian mini was also a simple conversion--I just removed the halberd and made him bare-handed. Both minis are well-muscled, dressed for Greek weather, and look athletic, yet have a savage look to them (compared to many Large giants which are usually hill giants with pot-bellies and furs), appropriate for once-great creatures who had fallen on hard times and mental instability.
Euryale, female gorgon (medusa): Ral Partha/AD&D, 11-470 Medusa, link
Good luck finding this one, it's long out of print and I stumbled across mine at a convention. Perhaps IronWind Metals will eventually rerelease it (as it looks like the have most of the Ral Partha molds and reproduction rights).
Greek Noble: Foundry/Caesarian Roman/unknown set, link
I bought this as part of one of their "We Who Are About To Die" sets in their Roman line, but I can't find this mini on any of the pictures. Perhaps they changed around some of the contents of blisters,
Hydra (5 heads): Games Workshop/Warmaster, Dark Elf War Hydra, link
Though made for a 15mm-scale game, the mini's large size still makes it at least a Large creature in 28mm scale. The multiple heads attack reasonably easy, and the necks are thin enough that you can position fairly easily. The mini is also nice because the creature's foreparts are propped up on a rock, elevating the mass of heads above the height of a typical 28mm mini (so there's no worry of obstructing adjacent spaces where heroes might be attacking. Reaper Miniatures also makes a nice hydra, but it was too big for what I wanted to do in the playtest game.
   Minotaur: Rackham/Confrontation/Keltois Minotaur 2, link
I like this miniature because he's really big, towering over a typical Foundry Greek mini by half an inch (and that's just to the top of his head). He's also suitably feral-looking, and the hooves are a nice touch (while the mythic minotaur had human feet, big heavy hooves make this mini more impressive).
   Oracle at Delphi: Unknown/unknown/unknown, link
I don't know who makes this miniature or what game line it comes from (probably Grenadier, RAFM, or Ral Partha).
Sthenno, female gorgon (medusa): Reaper Miniatures/Dark Heaven Legends/2354 Medusa, link
I made the playtest version of Sthenno monstrous with a long snaky body because of this miniature. They also have a newer sculpt, 2833 Medusa, which is more coiled and should take up about the same space as a human miniature rather than the horse-length #2354 version.

The remainder of this article is a list of miniatures links suitable for the other creatures in The New Argonauts. I didn't use these creatures or minis in the original playtest campaign and may not actually own these minis, but this list might save you some trouble when looking for something appropriate. If you don't like what these links show you, try Chartam's Minibase, he's done a great job of indexing minis from many sources.
