How to Build Spells

Rules, Guidelines, and Many Examples
by Sean K Reynolds

How to Build Spells is a sourcebook about devising and balancing spells for the d20 game. How to Build Spells stresses knowledge of the core spells, using benchmark spells for each spell level to determine the minimum and maximum power of your new spell, and writing clear text so your spell is concise and understandable.

In addition to general rules on creating and balancing spells, this book includes every Open spell ever created by author Sean K Reynolds and includes his design notes for each spell, giving his explanation for level, range, and effects as compared to other spells. Furthermore, it includes design notes on many non-Open spells he wrote while at Wizards of the Coast (altogether the book draws on the design notes of over 400 spells from Open and non-Open sources).

If you want to design new spells, modify existing spells, or just understand the thought process of spell design, this book is for you!

  • 50 new spells (arcane and divine)
  • 140 spells (arcane and divine) from other Open sources by Sean K Reynolds
  • Design commentary on all included spells
  • Design commentary on unusual or complicated spells from non-Open sources* by Sean K Reynolds
  • Extensive guidelines for creating and balancing spells

*Wizards of the Coast owns the copyright to these spells (such as from Magic of Faerûn) so we cannot include the spells in this book because of that copyright, but legally we can include the design commentary (and Wizards was kind enough to give us permission to do so in any case).
