For the purpose of these definitions, a
creature that is part-animal and part-humanoid is classified as a
mutant humanoid rather than a mutant animal. Thus, you'll find
centaurs, minotaurs, and nagas listed under mutant humanoid. Likewise,
part-insect/part-humanoid creatures (like driders) are classified as
mutant humanoids.
Corpse: A generally-humanoid
undead-looking creature that is not ghostly. Examples: bodak,
devourer, ghast, ghoul, lich, mohrg, mummy, skeleton, vampire, vampire
spawn, wight, zombie.
Dragon: Any generally reptilian creature that
has a draconic shape, often with wings. Examples: basilisk, behir,
chimera, dinosaur, dragon, dragonne, hydra, pseudodragon, wyvern.
Elemental: A creature composed of raw
elemental substance (generally air, earth, fire, or water), often in a
roughly humanoid shape. Examples: air elemental, belker, earth
elemental, fire elemental, invisible stalker, magmin, thoqqua, water
elemental.
Fiend: A humanoid or mutant humanoid creature
with monstrous features and batlike wings. Examples: babau demon,
balor demon, barbed devil, bearded devil, bone devil, gargoyle,
harpy (bat-winged 3E version), homunculus, horned devil, ice devil, imp
devil, mephit, pit fiend devil, quasit demon, vargouille, vrock demon.
Giant: A humanoid-shaped creature of great
size. Examples: athach, ettin, clay golem, cloud giant, djinni,
efreeti, fire giant, flesh golem, frost giant, glabrezu demon,
hezrou demon, hill giant, iron golem, marut inevitable, nalfeshnee
demon, nightwalker, ogre, ogre mage, shield guardian, stone giant,
stone golem, storm giant, titan, troll.
Humanoid: Any creature the approximate shape
of a humanoid with two arms, two legs, and an upright posture, with or
without wings. More monstrous creatures of this type are classified as
fiends or as mutant humanoids. Examples: aasimar, azer, bralani
eladrin, bugbear, chain devil, derro, dryad, erinyes devil, ghaele
eladrin, goblin, grimlock, hag, hobgoblin, jann, kolyarut inevitable,
kobold, nymph, orc, sprite, succubus demon, tiefling.
Insectoid: An insect-like creature with a hard
outer carapace instead of an internal skeleton. Examples: ankheg,
aranea, bebilith, chuul, formian, ice devil, phase spider, rast,
remorhaz, retriever demon, rust monster, spider eater.
Mutant Animal: A creature that resembles a
normal Earth animal except for some exaggerated feature, altered shape,
or special ability. Examples: achaierai, arrowhawk, blink dog,
bulette, chimera, cloaker, cockatrice, couatl, darkmantle, destrachan,
digester, dinosaur, dire animal, displacer beast, dragonne, frost worm,
girallon, gorgon, grick, griffon, hellcat devil, hell hound,
hippogriff, howler, hydra, kraken, krenshar, manticore, nightmare,
nightcrawler, nightwing, owlbear, pegasus, purple worm, ravid, sea cat,
shadow mastiff, shocker lizard, stirge, tarrasque, tojanida, unicorn,
winter wolf, worg, yeth hound, yrthak,
Mutant Humanoid: A humanoid-shaped creature
(or part-humanoid) with one or more significant physical alterations
that make it more than just an odd-looking human. Bat-winged
monstrous-looking humanoids should be listed in the Fiend category.
Extremely large creatures of this type should be listed in the Giant
category. Examples: avoral guardinal, barghest, centaur, choker,
doppelganger, dretch demon, drider, ettercap, gnoll, gray render,
harpy (bird-winged classical version), hound archon, lamia, lammasu,
leonal guardinal, lemure devil, lillend, lizardfolk, locathah, marilith
demon, medusa, merfolk, minotaur, naga, rakshasa, sahuagin, salamander,
satyr, skum, sphinx, squidheads, triton, troglodyte, xill, zelekhut
inevitable.
Ooze: A creature without a rigid form, often
somewhat amorphous. Examples: black pudding, chaos beast, gibbering
mouther, gelatinous cube, gray ooze, ochre jelly, lemure devil, mimic,
phasm.
Plant: A plantlike creature, whether fungal or
leafy. Examples: assassin vine, phantom fungus, shambling mound,
shrieker, tendriculos, treant, violet fungus.
Spirit: A generally-humanoid undead creature
that exists as a spirit without a body. Examples: allip, ghost,
shadow, spectre, wraith.
